Lost River Cave closed to public as they witness record water levels [Video]

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) – Lost River Cave is closed to the public as they continue to see record water levels.

Chief Executive Officer at Lost River Cave, Justin Jennings, said this may be the second or third largest flooding they’ve seen yet, with the water reaching about 40 feet higher than normal levels.

“The rise actually started overnight and by the time we arrived at 8 o’clock in the morning, the river had already overtaken the dance floor of our Cavern nightclub,” Jennings said. “From there, it just continued on. We actually gauged it at about 7 to 8 inches every 10 minutes, it was coming up so fast.”

While caves like Lost River’s acts as a drainage system, without the need for lots of groundwater during flood season, water can more easily overwhelm their 55 square mile area, also known as a watershed.
