CONSUMER FIRST ALERT: Online car seller scams [Video]

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – If you’re buying a car online, you’re a scammer’s kind of customer. Scammers are using popular online marketing places to try to cheat people looking to buy a car.

“These scammers list non-existent vehicles of all kinds in real online marketplaces,” Lisa Schiller of the Better Business Bureau in Wisconsin said.

This is a rising scam. Nearly 700 people in Wisconsin tell the Better Business Bureau about fake vehicles for sale online, some after losing thousands of dollars.

An Omro man, who we’re identifying only as Jim, tells Consumer First Alert he was pretty revved about a Range Rover for $1,200.

But he was suspicious when the seller asked him to pay with gift cards, because he remembered our Consumer First Alert reports and the important advice to never pay with a gift card.
