LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – Nebraska Attorney General Mike Hilgers has filed a lawsuit against Temu, a Chinese e-commerce company, and its affiliates over alleged numerous consumer protection violations.
Hilgers claims Temu is deceiving Nebraska consumers and harming Nebraska brands, businesses, and creators by unlawfully harvesting data, utilizing multiple deceptive practices to encourage purchase, allowing infringement and counterfeits to thrive, and engaging in deceptive marketing to ‘greenwash’ its image.
His examples of Temu’s alleged unlawful practices include:
- Employing Malware to Collect Nebraskan Data: Temu’s app, once downloaded, is accused of secretly installing malware that bypasses device security and granting the app unrestricted access to essentially everything on Nebraskans’ phones.
- Chinese Communist Party Theft of Nebraskan Data: Hilgers says Chinese law requires Temu to provide user data to the Chinese government upon request. He claims that once Nebraskans download the Temu app, they lose all control over their personal data, which may ultimately end up in the hands of a hostile foreign power.
